Jeff Scholzen
During the summer of 1995, Jeff was named the hitting coach for the most successful college summer team in college baseball, the Alaska Goldpanners. During that one summer stint, Jeff had the opportunity to tutor 4 future major league players, including former Angels and current Cardinals 2B, Adam Kennedy, who was named MVP of the Alaska League. The Goldpanners finished with a 33-18 record and qualified for the NBC World Series. In the spring of 1996, Jeff recruited and coached Southern Utah's only Major League player, RHP Ryan Jensen, who was drafted by the SF Giants in the 8th Rd. After serving 4 years at Southern Utah, Jeff then started on a successful Major League Scouting career. During Jeff's 10 year career to date as the Area Scouting Supervisor within the Four Corners/Las Vegas area, supervising up to 6 western states, Jeff has drafted some very successful players for the Angels, including his most noteworthy sign to date, in 2003 1st Round selection and current Angels shortstop and decorated top prospect, Brandon Wood. During Brandon's minor league career, he has been named 2005 California League and Minor League Player of the Year, as well as the 2005 Arizona Fall League Top Prospect. A 4-time minor league all-star and the 2008 Baseball America-Triple A Player of the Year, Brandon hit 43 HR in 2005 and has averaged 31 HR during his 5 years climbing the ladder to the big league level. Brandon most recently had his 1st 2 homer game of his young big league career vs the New York Yankees. Other notable players that have been signed by Jeff include former U of Utah 4 time All-Mountain West Conference 3B/1B, Jay Brossman, who was a late round sleeper, drafted in the 36th round in 2007, Jay became a Pioneer League All-Star 3B for the Orem Owlz. During the 2008 season, Jay led the Cedar Rapids Kernals (Class A) in doubles with 36, while slugging 12 HR's. Another late round steal, was 2007 50th round selection, 1B-Efren Navarro from UNLV, who was named a 2008 Midwest League (Class A) All-Star selection and was promoted to High A ball (Rancho Cucamongo Quakes) for the last 40+ games and hit .343. A St. George, Utah resident, Jeff Scholzen attended Hurricane HS in the Southern Utah area,
where he was a two-time 1st Team All-State selection in baseball & was named an Honorable Mention – All American
as a senior in 1987. After high school, Jeff moved on to the college level, where he was honored as an
all-conference selection at SS and CF on 3 separate occasions at Utah Valley State College and Eastern
Oregon University. Jeff's senior year at Eastern Oregon, he was a NAIA All-District selection and was
drafted by the Angels. After playing 2 years in the California Angels organization, Jeff returned to school,
and earned his Bachelors Degree in Physical Education from Southern Utah University. After graduating from SUU,
Jeff was approached and hired as the Head Baseball Coach at Southern Utah in the fall of 1993. At the time of his
hiring, Jeff became the youngest NCAA Head Coach in the nation at 24 years of Age.
